About Honolulu
In Hawaiian, the word “honolulu” means “sheltered bay,” or place of shelter. Situated along the southeast coast of the O`ahu island, it is the capital and largest community of the U. S. State of Hawaii.
It was first settled by Polynesian migrants to the archipelago, most probably in the 12th century. The exact year remains, however, a matter of dispute. In the late 18th and 19th centuries Honolulu was a focal point for merchant ships travelling between North America, Europe and Asia, which gave a boost to the economic development of the island.
After the fall of the Hawaiian monarchy in the late 19th century, Honolulu was annexed by the United States of America. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor had a huge impact on this exotic paradise, which, despite its turbulent history, has managed to maintain the position of a capital and the largest commercial and tourist center of the Hawaiian Islands. It is now a modern city with high-rise buildings, and perhaps one of the few places on the planet where technical progress and nature do not confront each other negatively, where they live in symbiosis, in full harmony. This and much more is what makes Honolulu a dream holiday destination.
In addition to the famous Honolulu beaches, with their golden sand and the serene blue waters of the Pacific, this fantastic resort has a lot more to offer. The Nuuanu Pali Lookout on the eastern Koolau mountain range is one of the best views on O`ahu, affording a stunning cliff edge panorama east overlooking the plains of Kane`ohe. Pearl Harbor is, of course, a must-see while you are on O`ahu; the dramatic events of WWII will come to life in front of your eyes.
Those interested in history shouldn`t miss the Lolani palace, residence of the last Hawaiian monarch, Queen Liliuokalani. It is the only royal palace in the United States. If you’re in search of light-hearted entertainment, prepare yourself for a day of family fun at the Waikiki Aquarium. After a long day of sunbathing on the beach or sightseeing, you can choose from an immense variety of fine dining options, such as Duke`s Restaurant and Barefoot Bar, Shore Bird Beach Broiler, the Mai Tai Bar, Roy`s Restaurant, to name just a few of the outstanding restaurants in the capital. Sunny Honolulu has something to delight everyone.
