About Bucharest
Romania’s capital as well its business and industrial center, Bucharest is situated in the country’s southeastern portion along the Dâmbovita River. The city was formerly named the Citadel of Dâmbovita.
Bucharest was not mentioned by scholars until the year 1459. Through the years, it has undergone an almost constant state of change, ascending in 1862 to the position of Romania’s state capital to become Romania’s artistic, media and cultural center. A blend of Interbellum, Communist-era and modern styles, its unique architecture is one of the primary attractions.
Bucharest received the nickname "Little Paris" or "Paris of the East" between the two World Wars, thanks to its unique architecture and the sophistication of its inhabitants. Earthquakes, war and Nicolae Ceausescu's reign destroyed or damaged many of the historical center’s buildings, although there are quite a few which did survive. Bucharest has been undergoing a cultural and economic rebirth since the fall of Communism.
In January 2006, official population estimates put the population of Bucharest proper at 1,930,390. The municipality stretches past the confines of Bucharest proper, where the population reaches 2.1 million. When the towns scattered around the municipality are included, the population of Bucharest reaches 2.6 million people, making it the European Union’s sixth-largest city.
