Although the seat of Netherlands government is in The Hague, Amsterdam is the nominal capital. It is also the country's largest city, with a population of almost 750,000, and the most visited, with over 3,5 milion foreign visitors a year. Amsterdam is one of Europe's great cities with an unique character and its own individual style. Built on a network of canals, along which are the beautiful tall houses, the centre of Amsterdam is compact and largely pedestrian friendly. For a fairly small city, Amsterdam has a surprisingly large number of museums and galleries. Traditional art-lovers know the route to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. But modern art too is richly represented in Amsterdam, with the Stedelijk Museum and the Cobra museum in Amstelveen to name just two. There is a plenty of galleries, especially in the Spiegelkwartier and in the Jordaan. And if you want to experience more of nature, then the gardens of the universities and Artis Zoo are the right addresses.
