- Bus
- The buses in Vilnius offer an inexpensive and convenient way of getting around the city. Tickets cost no more than 1 lita (30 Euro cents), and can be purchased at most newspaper stands or directly from the driver. Make sure that you always have a valid ticket, that is to say, a punched one. Bus #1 connects the Vilnius International Airport to the railway and intercity bus station, situated next to each other; bus #2 can take you from the airport to the city center.
- Trolley Bus
- Trolleys cover a smaller area of Vilnius than buses; they are quite reliable and run frequently. You can use the same kind of ticket for all forms of public transportation. Just like the buses, trolleys tend to get packed during rush hour.
- Taxi
- Once you’ve arrived at the Vilnius International Airport, which is situated just five kilometers or a ten-minute drive from the city center, you can reach the downtown area by taxi for no more than 20 litas, or 6 Euro. The prices can get even lower if you call a taxi at phone number 1446. There are several reliable and well-known taxi companies in the Lithuanian capital, such as Ekipazas, Mersera and Martonas. Bear in mind that here, like in most European cities, taxi drivers charge more if you stop them in the street. Most of the drivers are friendly and honest, but you should still make sure you’re not being charged a night rate during the daytime. Also, they tend to drive at really high speeds, so fastening your seatbelt is highly recommended.
- Minicab
- Minicabs are privately-operated mini-buses serving as taxis; they offer a faster and more comfortable alternative to traditional public transportation. One ride costs only 2 litas.
- Train
- There are direct railway services to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Riga and Warsaw, and several interior destinations. Railway transport is the least expensive way of traveling in Lithuania; it’s ideal if you’re not in a hurry and wish to mingle with the locals. For more information, call 233-0087.
- Intercity Bus
- The central bus station in Vilnius is lively and modern. There are fast and frequent connections to many destinations in both Eastern and Western Europe. Tallinn can only be reached by bus, since there are no direct trains. Over the past few years, the bus traffic in Lithuania has increased significantly.
- Airplane
- The airport in Vilnius is rather small, but well-organized and well-connected to the city center. It operates with 10 international airlines, including the major Russian carrier, Aeroflot, Lufthansa, SAS and the local Lithuanian airlines.
