Getting There
BY AIR Munich's Franz Josef Strauss Airport is situated around 35 km north of the city. The airport serves a large number of international and domestic airlines. For transportation to the city, there's the Lufthansa Airport Bus, which costs 10 EUR one-way and 16 EUR return-ticket. The buses leave around every 20 minutes, and it takes about 50 minutes to arrive at the Hauptbahnhof. A better way to the center is the S-Bahn train. There are two lines from the airport, the S-1 and the S-8. They leave every 10 minutes, and the trip takes between 40 to 50 minutes depending on your destination. You should purchase a "Single Tageskarte Gesamtnetz," which for 10 EUR will cover the ride as well as Munich's entire S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram and bus system for the entire day. If there are 2 to 5 members in your group, an even better deal is the "Partner Tageskarte Gesamtnetz," which is only 18 EUR and good for the whole group to travel on the network for the entire day. These tickets can be gotten from the DB ticket booths or the ticket machines. Make sure that you validate your ticket beforehand by using the machines marked with an "E".
Getting Around
PUBLIC TRANSPORT Munich boasts one of Europe's nicest and easiest-to-navigate public transportation networks. Guests can purchase either a 1 Day or a 3 Day Welcome Card. This card provides unrestricted utilization of the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, Tram and Bus lines. Plus, you'll also receive 50% off the admission price of museums and other attractions. You can buy the Welcome Card at the airport's Tourist Info office. For the 3 Day pass, it's only 15.50 EUR for one person or 43.00 EUR for a group card good for up to 5 people. It's the best buy in Munich. The card also comes with a guide book and a very helpful map.
TAXIS The taxis in Munich are quite reputable, so you needn't worry about being overcharged. They're either creamy-white BMWs or Mercedes. The meters begin at 2.60 EUR and increase 1.20 EUR for each kilometer. You can flag down a taxi or even call for one, which means a slight extra charge.
ON FOOT The center of Munich is perfect for exploring on foot. There are several guide books that contain guided walking tours, where you follow along with the book and read the history of the buildings, churches, and the historic events that took place in the streets themselves. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and stop for a bit of espresso and a snack from one of the delightful cafés and bakeries. If you decide to make your own tour, be sure to visit the Viktualienmarkt, Marienplatz, Isartor, Sendlinger Tor, Odeonsplatz, Karlsplatz and Frauenkirche. Also, you absolutely have to climb the tower located between the Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt. You can't fail to see it, as it's the only one which has a green roof. It costs only 1 EUR to go up, and there's an incredible view of the city.
