GETTING THERE
FROM THE AIRPORT Situated just 6km from the center of the city you'll find Nice's airport, which is fairly new and professionally run. The Service 98 bus runs every 30 minutes and heads to Nice Gare Routiere bus station by way of the Promenade, and stops at each of the major hotels along the way. Then there's the Service 99 bus which leaves every 30 minutes as well. This route goes part of the way down the Promenade, but then heads to the Nice Gare SNCF Railway station. There's usually about a 15 minute period between the departure times for these buses. During the busy season the 98 bus finishes at about 11:30 PM while the last 99 bus can stop at 9PM. The fare is only 4 EUR so there's no reason to take the terribly expensive taxis.
BY CAR The fastest way to travel in France is by high-speed train, still there is a fairly good network of highways which link Nice to the rest of France. Running west to Marseille and east towards Italy is the A8. Then there's the 202 which runs through the mountains to North, while along the coast you'll find the scenic N98.
BY TRAIN Situated on the city centre's border about 1km from the Mediterranean Sea, on avenue Thiers, there's the train station Gare Nice Ville. Servicing destinations on the French Mediterranean coastline, this station also provides transport to the north into parts of greater France as well as to locations in Spain and Italy. The primary operator is the state company SNCF although there's also a private company providing service to Digne-les-Bains.
BY BUS One of the best ways to travel between Nice and the cities along the Riviera is to take the bus. The Gare Routiere is the network hub, and buses leave from here for Antibes and Cannes on Route 200, to Vence on Route 400/ 410, to Monaco, Menton, Eze, and Villefranche on Route 100, and to St. Jean Cap Ferat on Route 81, but the bus doesn't run on Sundays. The Ligne d'Azur Trans Alpes-Maritime Route 100 leaves Nice Main Bus Station every 15 minutes during the week and every 20 minutes on Sundays and holidays, and the fare is only 1.30 EUR. You can purchase the ticket on the bus; just tell the driver where you want to go and how many passengers are in your party.
GETTING AROUND
BY TRAIN The simplest and quickest way to travel along the Cote d'Azur coast is by train. For just a couple of euros and after only 30 minutes you're in downtown Cannes or Monaco. It only takes about 15 minutes to get to the quaint little towns of Antibes, Villefranche and Beaulieu by train, and they have some marvelous beaches. There're trains going both ways about every 30 minutes during the summer. You can even travel to Italy by train; it only takes 50 minutes to get to Ventimiglia. This city is fascinating because even though it is quite near to Nice it has a completely different ambiance and personality.
BY BUS The fastest and easiest way to get around the city is to travel by bus since Nice doesn't have a Metro. Bus fare is only 1.30 EUR a trip. It is possible to travel from one end of Nice to the other. Actually you can travel to just about any of the towns along the French Riviera for only 1.30 EUR. It is also possible to purchase a "sun pass" for 1, 5 or 7 days. With it you can use all the regular buses in Nice as well as those in the neighboring hills.
