City Information: Singapore has been an imperial outpost and trading centre for over 1700 years, initially for the Srivijaya Empire, then for the British and in the modern era as an independent republic. It is today on of the most influential and wealthy countries in South East Asia and provides the headquarters for many a multi-national corporation in this region.

The city, and island, of Singapore became a British Crown colony in 1819 and grew to become one of the Empire’s most important entrepot towns, acting as storage for the British Empire in East Asia and being of vital strategic importance on the shipping route from Europe to China.

After the Second World War, Singapore resumed life as a Crown colony but with self government and eventually became an independent nation in 1965. Since that time the economy has grown massively and Singapore has become wealthy and enjoys a very high standard of living.
